Today, USY Israel is responsible for facilitating various
youth programs including: USY Pilgrimage, Nativ, Neshama, and various
Jewish Day School trips to Israel. Below is an article about Solomon Schechter Westchester by J.J. Jonah, director of Youth Department Operations. Solomon Schechter Westchester Does Israel! 76 seniors from the Solomon Schechter High School in Westchester arrived in Israel early February after a week in Poland to learn, live and love Israel. For 2 months, these eager and great students from Westchester, New York were able to really learn and enjoy the wonderful sites of the Land of Israel. This trip was the first partnership between the school and the Fuchsberg Center, and we look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come. The Center was able to provide for the needs of the school in terms of Conservative observance and atmosphere, and also their educational needs. The group was based at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, and enjoyed the wonderful facilities and the great location of the Guest House. The trip was innovative and educational, and offered the students great opportunities to learn about the history of the Land of Israel not only through texts, but with their own eyes and feet. The group had "Israel educators" who would teach them for about an hour in the morning in the classroom, and then would actually go and see the sites of that period of time. For example: One of the days, we discussed the Crusader period. After learning in class about the period, the battles and the outcome, we departed for Acco, the Crusader capital in the later years and then hiked Nachal Kziv in the Upper Galilee which ended in a beautiful Crusader castle called the "Monfort". The day ended with watching the sunset in Rosh Hanikra, after seeing the beautiful Grottos right near the border with Lebanon. The trip incorporated educational themes with challenging hikes as well as fun activities. In the evenings,
the group enjoyed a variety of cultural events and educational options.
For example, the group participated in an Idan Reichal concert, as well
as experiencing an Israeli Basketball game. Although it was far from
the level of the NBA, the atmosphere and the experience was all worth
it.
